ABOUT THIS READER
This NGSS-aligned science reading passage explains how climate change affects human health. Students learn how rising temperatures, extreme weather, air pollution, and changing ecosystems increase the risk of illness, disease, and mental stress. Real-life examples include heatstroke, mosquito-borne diseases, wildfire smoke, and waterborne illnesses from floods. The passage highlights both physical and emotional health impacts. It supports Earth and Life Science standards and builds science literacy through vocabulary, comprehension questions, and critical thinking prompts tailored for middle school students.

Climate change does more than warm the planet—it also affects human health in many serious ways. As temperatures rise and weather patterns change, people around the world are facing new health risks and challenges.

One major concern is the increase in heat-related illnesses. As heatwaves become more common and intense, people can suffer from heat exhaustion or heatstroke, especially in cities where buildings and roads hold in heat. The elderly, young children, and people with certain health conditions are most at risk.

Air pollution is another problem linked to climate change. Warmer temperatures can lead to more smog, especially in urban areas. This can make it harder for people to breathe, especially those with asthma or lung diseases. Wildfires, which are becoming more frequent and intense due to drier conditions, release harmful smoke into the air, affecting people even hundreds of miles away.

Climate change also affects the spread of diseases. Warmer temperatures and changing rainfall patterns help mosquitoes and ticks survive in more places. This can lead to the spread of illnesses like malaria, dengue fever, and Lyme disease into new areas where they were not common before.

Extreme weather events like floods, hurricanes, and droughts can also harm human health. Flooding can lead to contaminated water and the spread of waterborne diseases. Droughts can reduce food and water supplies, leading to poor nutrition. After storms, communities may face injuries, stress, and problems accessing medical care.

Lastly, climate change can affect mental health. People who experience natural disasters may suffer from anxiety, depression, or trauma. Worrying about climate impacts, especially in young people, is becoming more common.
