What is Area?

Area is the amount of space inside a shape
Area is the amount of space inside a shape

Area is how we measure the amount of space inside a shape. Think of it like how many square tiles would fit on the floor of a room.

Area is always measured in square units - like square centimeters (cm²), square inches (in²), or square meters (m²).

Why is area important? We use area measurements in many real-life situations:

  • Painting walls (how much paint to buy)
  • Installing flooring (how much carpet or tile is needed)
  • Planting gardens (how many plants will fit)
  • Building houses (designing rooms and spaces)

How to Find Area

Finding area using grid method and formulas
Finding area using grid method and formulas

There are two main ways to find the area of a shape:

1. Counting Squares: For simple shapes, we can count the number of squares inside the shape. This works especially well on grid paper.

2. Using Formulas: For regular shapes, we use special formulas to calculate the area quickly and accurately.

Area Formula for Rectangles

Area = length × width

To find the area of a rectangle, multiply its length by its width.

Let's practice with an example:

Example: Find the area of a rectangle that is 8 cm long and 5 cm wide.
Step 1: Identify the length (8 cm) and width (5 cm)
Step 2: Multiply length × width → 8 × 5
Step 3: Calculate the result → 40 cm²

So the area is 40 square centimeters. Notice how we write the unit as cm² to show it's a measurement of area.

Area Formulas for Different Shapes

Different shapes have different formulas for calculating area. Here are the most common ones:

Area vs. Perimeter

Understanding the difference between area and perimeter

Area and perimeter are different concepts in geometry:

Area measures the space inside a shape (surface covered).
Perimeter measures the distance around a shape (boundary length).

Here's a comparison to help you remember the difference:

Real-World Examples

Area in everyday life
Area in everyday life

Let's see how area is used in real life:

Example 1: A soccer field is 100 meters long and 70 meters wide. What is its area?
Solution: Area = length × width = 100 × 70 = 7,000 m²

Example 2: A pizza has a diameter of 35 cm. What is its area?
Solution: Radius = 35 ÷ 2 = 17.5 cm
Area = π × r² ≈ 3.14 × (17.5)² ≈ 3.14 × 306.25 ≈ 961.6 cm²

Example 3: A triangular garden has a base of 8 m and height of 5 m. What is its area?
Solution: Area = ½ × base × height = ½ × 8 × 5 = 20 m²

Example 4: Your classroom is 10 meters long and 8 meters wide. How much carpet is needed to cover the floor?
Solution: Area = 10 × 8 = 80 m² of carpet needed

Look around you - how many examples of area can you find in your environment?
