About This Reader
This passage introduces first-graders to the intriguing process of coral growth. It explains how a single tiny polyp attaches to a rock and begins building its hard protective cup. The text describes the gradual process of polyp multiplication and the formation of coral colonies. By highlighting the extremely slow growth rate of coral, with some reefs taking thousands of years to form, the passage instills a sense of wonder about the age and complexity of coral structures. This exploration of coral growth helps young learners understand the patience and time required in nature's processes, particularly in marine ecosystems.
Coral grows very slowly. It starts when a tiny coral animal called a polyp sticks to a rock in the ocean. This polyp makes a hard cup around itself. Then it makes copies of itself. These new polyps also make hard cups. Over time, many polyps grow next to each other. Their hard cups join together to make a big coral colony. It can take years for coral to grow just a little bit. Some big coral reefs took thousands of years to grow!
