Turtles are reptiles that live on land and in water. They have a hard shell that protects their body. Land turtles are called tortoises. Tortoises live on land but female tortoises go to sandy beaches to lay their eggs. When the baby tortoises hatch, they crawl down to the ocean.
Sea turtles have flippers instead of legs so they can easily swim. They only come onto beaches to nest and lay eggs. Baby sea turtles grow up swimming in the ocean until they are adults. All types of turtles are cold-blooded so they like to nap in sunny spots to keep warm.
