What is an Array?

A 3x4 array of apples

An array is a way of arranging objects in rows and columns to form a rectangle or square. Think of it like a grid where everything is organized neatly.

Arrays help us count and multiply easily. When we arrange objects in rows and columns, we can see how multiplication works. For example, 3 rows with 4 apples in each row gives us 12 apples total (3 × 4 = 12).

The important thing about arrays is that:

  • Each row has the same number of objects
  • Each column has the same number of objects
  • They form a rectangle or square shape

How Arrays Work

Array with rows and columns labeled showing how to count them
Rows go across, columns go down

Arrays have two important parts:

Rows go across (left to right).
Columns go down (top to bottom).

To find out how many objects are in an array, we can:

  1. Count all the objects one by one
  2. Count the number of rows and multiply by the number of columns
  3. Count the number of columns and multiply by the number of rows

Array Formula

Total = Rows × Columns

Multiply the number of rows by the number of columns to find the total number of objects.

Let's look at an example array:

This array has 3 rows and 4 columns. We can calculate the total number of stars:
3 rows × 4 columns = 12 stars
