What is a Digit?

A digit is a single symbol used to represent numbers in our number system. There are ten digits: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.

Think of digits as the alphabet of mathematics. Just like letters form words, digits combine to form numbers. Each digit has its own value and meaning.

Digits are the foundation of our number system. Without digits, we couldn't write numbers or do math calculations. They're essential tools for counting, measuring, and solving problems.

How Digits Form Numbers

Digits combine to create all numbers, from small numbers like 5 to huge numbers like 1,000,000. When we put digits together, their position determines their value.

Combining digits creates numbers with new values

Let's see how this works:

Example: The number 25 is made from two digits: 2 and 5
Step 1: The digit 2 is in the tens place → 2 × 10 = 20
Step 2: The digit 5 is in the ones place → 5 × 1 = 5
Step 3: Add them together → 20 + 5 = 25

So digits work together to create numbers larger than themselves!

Understanding Place Value

Place value is the value of a digit based on its position in a number. Each position has a different value:

Ones place: The rightmost digit (1-9)
Tens place: The second digit from the right (10-90)
Hundreds place: The third digit from the right (100-900)

As we move left, each position is worth 10 times more than the position to its right. This is called the base-ten system.
