What are Dimensions?

Dimensions in everyday objects

Dimensions tell us how many directions we can move in a shape or object.

Definition: Dimensions are measurements that describe the size and position of objects. In math, dimensions help us understand shapes and space.

Think about how you move:

  • On a line (1 dimension), you can only move forward or backward
  • On a piece of paper (2 dimensions), you can move left/right and up/down
  • In your classroom (3 dimensions), you can move left/right, up/down, and forward/backward

2D vs 3D Dimensions

Comparison of 2D and 3D shapes
2D vs 3D shapes

Shapes can have different numbers of dimensions. The most common are 2-dimensional (2D) and 3-dimensional (3D) shapes.

2D Dimensions

Flat shapes with length and width

Examples: paper, screens, paintings

3D Dimensions

Solid shapes with length, width, and height

Examples: boxes, balls, buildings

3D coordinate system

In math, we use dimensions to describe objects using:

Length: How long something is from end to end
Width: How wide something is from side to side
Height: How tall something is from bottom to top

For example, when describing a box:

  • We measure its length (front to back)
  • Its width (side to side)
  • Its height (top to bottom)

Points, Lines, and Planes

Basic geometric elements

Geometry starts with three basic elements:

Point

A location in space with no size (0 dimensions)

Line

Made of many points in a row (1 dimension)

Plane

A flat surface that extends forever (2 dimensions)
