What is Mean?

Understanding mean as the "fair share" of a group of numbers

The mean is a mathematical concept that represents the average of a set of numbers. It's what you get when you share everything equally.

Think of it like this: if you have cookies and want to share them equally with your friends, the mean tells you how many cookies each person would get.

In math, we calculate the mean by adding up all the numbers in a set and then dividing by how many numbers there are. This gives us the "average" value that represents the whole group.

Types of Mean

Different types of means used in mathematics

While we usually mean "arithmetic mean" when we say "average," there are actually different types of means in mathematics:

Arithmetic Mean

The most common type of mean. It's calculated by adding all numbers and dividing by the count.

Sum of values ÷ Number of values

Geometric Mean

Used for growth rates. It's calculated by multiplying all numbers and taking the nth root (where n is the count).

∏(values)1/n

Harmonic Mean

Used for rates and ratios. It's calculated as the reciprocal of the average of reciprocals.

n ÷ ∑(1/value)

How to Calculate Mean

Step-by-step visual guide to calculating mean
Step-by-step calculation of mean

Calculating the arithmetic mean is simple when you follow these steps:

Example: Find the mean of 5, 7, 3, and 6

1
Add all the numbers: 5 + 7 + 3 + 6 = 21
2
Count how many numbers there are: 4 numbers
3
Divide the sum by the count: 21 ÷ 4 = 5.25

So the mean is 5.25

Mean Formula

Mean = (x₁ + x₂ + ... + xₙ) / n

Where x₁, x₂, ... are the values, and n is the number of values.

Real-World Examples

Real-world applications of mean
Using mean in everyday situations

Let's see how mean is used in real-world situations:

Example 1: Test Scores
Sarah scored 85, 92, 78, and 90 on her math tests. What is her mean score?
Solution: (85 + 92 + 78 + 90) ÷ 4 = 345 ÷ 4 = 86.25

Example 2: Basketball Points
A basketball player scored 12, 18, 15, 22, and 13 points in five games. What is her mean score?
Solution: (12 + 18 + 15 + 22 + 13) ÷ 5 = 80 ÷ 5 = 16

Example 3: Daily Temperature
The temperatures for a week were: 72°F, 68°F, 75°F, 70°F, 73°F, 77°F, 71°F. What was the mean temperature?
Solution: (72+68+75+70+73+77+71) ÷ 7 = 506 ÷ 7 ≈ 72.29°F

Example 4: Book Pages
If a student read 25, 32, 28, and 35 pages on four different days, what was her mean daily reading?
Solution: (25 + 32 + 28 + 35) ÷ 4 = 120 ÷ 4 = 30 pages
