What is a Coordinate Plane?

Cartesian coordinate plane showing x and y axes with labels, grid lines, and origin point (0,0) marked
The coordinate plane with x and y axes

A coordinate plane is like a map for numbers. It has two number lines that cross each other:

1. The x-axis (horizontal line) - Goes left to right
2. The y-axis (vertical line) - Goes up and down

Where they cross is called the origin (0,0). Every point on the plane has two numbers called coordinates written as (x,y). The first number tells you how far to move left or right, and the second number tells you how far to move up or down.

How to Plot Points

Step-by-step illustration showing how to plot the point (2,3): 1. Start at origin, 2. Move right 2 units, 3. Move up 3 units, 4. Mark the point
Steps to plot a point on the coordinate plane

Let's learn how to plot the point (2,3):

Steps to Plot Points

  1. Start at the origin (0,0)
  2. Move right 2 units (the x-coordinate)
  3. Move up 3 units (the y-coordinate)
  4. Mark the point with a dot
Remember:
  • Positive x-values move right, negative moves left
  • Positive y-values move up, negative moves down
  • Always move along the x-axis first, then the y-axis

Plotting Points Examples

Coordinate plane with points plotted at (3,4), (-1,4), (0,-2), and (-3,-1) showing different quadrant positions
Points plotted in different quadrants

Let's practice plotting different points:

Example 1: Plot (3,4)
Start at (0,0), move right 3, up 4

Example 2: Plot (-1,4)
Start at (0,0), move left 1, up 4

Example 3: Plot (0,-2)
Start at (0,0), don't move left/right (x=0), move down 2

Example 4: Plot (-3,-1)
Start at (0,0), move left 3, down 1

The coordinate plane is divided into four quadrants:
Quadrant I: (+,+)    Quadrant II: (-,+)
Quadrant III: (-,-)   Quadrant IV: (+,-)
