About this worksheet
Turn inherited traits into a visual mapping task with this scaffolded graphic organizer for grades 3-5. Students study a cat family — mother Luna, father Shadow, and kitten Pip — then map each of Pip's traits back to the parent it came from: fur from one parent, tail from the other, and eye color from both.
From there, students complete a cause-and-effect flow that moves from parents to offspring to variation, filling in how each trait was passed down and why Pip resembles both parents yet is identical to neither. A final one-line synthesis locks in the big idea: offspring inherit traits from their parents, which is why they show variation.
The layout gives students plenty of room to write, and every blank has a matching answer. Includes a complete single-page answer key. Aligned to NGSS 3-LS3-1 and pitched for upper-elementary learners. Just print and teach.
