About this worksheet
Find the Evidence in What They Said Worksheet: Identifying relevant evidence in an explanation (Grade 4 Science, TEKS 4.3C)
Students read what a classmate said in a speech bubble and label each sentence as the claim, the evidence, or something that does not help, then read a classmate who gave no numbers and choose the question that would help him most. The page teaches the skill first, so no prior lesson is needed, and every student task is sort, circle, or fill in. One sheet is one page, with two short parts and nothing to write from scratch.
What's Inside
- A short teach box on listening for the claim and the evidence
- Part A: write C, E, or N for four things a classmate said, first one done
- Part B: a second classmate with no numbers, plus three circle the answer questions, first one done
- A visual answer key with answers marked in red, plus a short teacher note with what to watch for
How Teachers Use It
Each sheet follows the same three steps: read the short teach box, sort four items with the first one done for you, then answer three quick questions with the first one done for you. It takes 6 to 8 minutes and prints clearly in black and white. The focus skill is identifying relevant evidence in an explanation, part of TEKS 4.3C: develop evidence-based explanations and communicate findings, conclusions, and proposed solutions.
Why It Works
Fourth graders can usually read a table before they can explain what it means. These sheets give them the words: claim, evidence, stronger, weaker. Each sheet stays inside one investigation, so students never have to hold two stories at once, and every question is one step. Wrong choices are believable, not silly. Pair it with the other five Grade 4 Explaining With Evidence sheets to cover explaining, proposing solutions, communicating, and discussion.
