Line Plots with Fractions Grade 4 preview and details

About this worksheet

Line plots with fractions worksheet that connects measurement data to fraction operations. Across three student pages, learners build two line plots from raw measurements, read a finished one, and answer questions that require adding and subtracting fractions straight from the data.

What's inside (3 student pages + answer key)

  • Page 1 – Fourths: 10 pencil lengths measured to the nearest 1/4 inch. Students plot the X's, find the most common length, and subtract to compare the longest and shortest.
  • Page 2 – Eighths: 8 days of rainfall to the nearest 1/8 inch. A hint reminds students that 1/4 = 2/8 and 1/2 = 4/8 so every value lands on a tick. Questions include adding the two wettest days (5/8 + 4/8 = 1 1/8).
  • Page 3 – Read the plot: A completed line plot of ribbon pieces in fourths of a foot. Students count pieces, compare lengths, and join two 3/4-foot pieces.

Standards: CCSS 4.MD.B.4 (make a line plot with fractional units of 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 and solve addition and subtraction problems using the data) and CCSS 3.MD.B.4 (line plots in halves and fourths) for pages 1 and 3.

Why teachers love it: Real measurement contexts, a fourths → eighths progression, and questions that go beyond counting X's into fraction reasoning. Answer key includes the completed plots. Print-and-go.
