About this worksheet

The Three Kinds of Rock Worksheet: Igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rock (Grade 4 Florida Science)

Students learn how igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks form, then match three picture cards (sand layers, marble, and cooled lava) to the right kind of rock. Then they look at coquina, a Florida rock made of tiny shells, and the old fort in St. Augustine built from it. The page teaches the idea first, so no prior lesson is needed, and every answer can be found on the page.

What's Inside

  • A short teach box on the three ways rocks form
  • Part A: three large picture cards; circle igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic
  • Part B: coquina and the St. Augustine fort; two circle questions
  • A raccoon guide with a question to get students thinking
  • An answer key with answers marked in red, plus a short teacher note with what to watch for and a quick real-world activity

How Teachers Use It

Read the short teach box together, then let students work through Part A and Part B on their own or with a partner. It takes 8 to 10 minutes and prints clearly in black and white. The focus skill is identifying the three categories of rocks. Florida benchmark: SC.4.E.6.1: Identify the three categories of rocks: igneous (formed from molten rock), sedimentary (pieces of other rocks and fossilized organisms), and metamorphic (formed from heat and pressure).

Why It Works

Coquina and limestone are under Florida students’ feet, so the rock types connect to a place they know. Questions are short circle answers with clear choices, and the reasoning is on the teacher key.
