What are Inherited Traits?

Inherited traits are characteristics that are passed down from parents to their children through genes. These traits are determined by the DNA we inherit from our biological parents.

Examples of inherited traits include:
• Eye color
• Hair color and texture
• Height
• Blood type
• Certain inherited conditions

These traits are part of your genotype (your genetic code) and make up your phenotype (the traits you actually show). Every person has a unique combination of traits that makes them special!

How Inheritance Works

Inheritance happens through special instructions in our cells called DNA. Here's how it works:

1

DNA

Contains all genetic instructions

2

Genes

Sections of DNA that code for specific traits

3

Chromosomes

Structures that package DNA into tight coils

4

Alleles

Different versions of the same gene

5

Inheritance

Passing of alleles from parents to children

Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes - one set from each parent. This means you get two copies of every gene (one from mom and one from dad). How these copies interact determines which traits you show.

The study of how traits are inherited is called genetics, which began with Gregor Mendel's experiments with pea plants in the 1800s.

There are different types of traits that follow different inheritance patterns:

Dominant Traits

Shown when at least one dominant allele is present

Recessive Traits

Shown only when two recessive alleles are present

Acquired Traits

Developed during life, not inherited (like skills)

Inherited vs. Acquired Traits

Inherited Traits Acquired Traits
Passed from parents to children Developed during lifetime
Determined by genes Learned or developed
Examples: Eye color, hair color, blood type Examples: Riding a bike, speaking a language, scars
Present at birth Develop after birth

Some traits are controlled by many genes working together, which is why traits like height show a range of variation instead of just two options.
