What is Plant Propagation?

Plant propagation is how new plants grow from parent plants. It's nature's way of making more plants! There are two main types:

1. Sexual propagation: This uses seeds that form when pollen fertilizes flowers. Each seed contains a tiny new plant.
2. Asexual (vegetative) propagation: This uses plant parts like stems, leaves, or roots to grow new plants that are identical to the parent.

Propagation helps plants spread and survive. Some plants can propagate in several different ways!

Plants have developed many clever ways to make new plants. Here are the most common propagation methods:

1

Seed Propagation

Growing plants from seeds - the most common natural method

2

Stem Cuttings

Rooting pieces of stems in water or soil

3

Leaf Cuttings

Growing new plants from leaves or leaf pieces

4

Division

Splitting mature plants into smaller sections

5

Grafting

Joining two plants together to grow as one

Each method works best for certain types of plants. For example:
• Tomatoes grow well from seeds
• Roses often grow from cuttings
• Hostas are easily divided
• Many fruit trees are grafted

Propagation is essential for many reasons:

Food Production

Grow more fruits, vegetables, and crops to feed people

Environment

Plant trees and restore natural habitats

Biodiversity

Save rare or endangered plant species

Propagation helps us:
• Grow more food with the best qualities
• Create identical copies of special plants
• Preserve heirloom varieties
• Study plant growth and development
• Make gardening more affordable

Without propagation, we wouldn't have enough plants for food, medicine, oxygen, or beautiful gardens!
