What Are Photosynthesis Reactants?

Photosynthesis is how plants make their own food! It's the amazing process where plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to create glucose (sugar) and release oxygen.

Think of plants as nature's chefs! They take ingredients from their environment and transform them into food energy. The main ingredients, or reactants, are:

Carbon dioxide - from the air around us
Water - absorbed through the roots from the soil
Light energy - from the sun

With the help of a special green pigment called chlorophyll, plants combine these ingredients to make their food!

How Photosynthesis Works

Photosynthesis happens inside special parts of plant cells called chloroplasts. These contain chlorophyll, which gives plants their green color and captures sunlight. Here's how this amazing food-making process works:

1

Light Absorption

Chlorophyll in leaves captures sunlight energy

2

Water Intake

Roots absorb water from the soil

3

Carbon Dioxide

Leaves take in carbon dioxide from air

4

Food Production

Plant makes glucose (sugar) for energy

5

Oxygen Release

Plant releases oxygen into the air

The special formula for photosynthesis is:
6CO₂ + 6H₂O + Light Energy → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
Which means: Carbon Dioxide + Water + Sunlight → Glucose + Oxygen

Why Photosynthesis is Important

Illustration of the oxygen cycle between plants and animals

Photosynthesis is essential for all life on Earth! Here's why it's so important:

Oxygen Production

Creates the oxygen we breathe - without plants, we couldn't survive!

Food Source

Produces food for plants, which becomes food for animals and humans

Carbon Cycle

Helps balance carbon dioxide levels in our atmosphere

Without photosynthesis, there would be no:
• Oxygen to breathe
• Food for animals and humans
• Balanced atmosphere
• Fossil fuels (which come from ancient plants)

Photosynthesis works together with cellular respiration to create the amazing circle of life that keeps our planet alive!
