What is Energy Transfer?

Energy transfer is the movement of energy from one place to another or from one object to another. It's how energy travels through our world! Energy can't be created or destroyed, but it can be moved and changed into different forms.

Think about when you feel the warmth of the sun on your face. That's energy traveling 93 million miles from the sun to Earth! Or when you turn on a lamp - electrical energy becomes light energy that brightens the room. Energy is always on the move!

Types of Energy Transfer

Heat energy moves in three different ways: conduction, convection, and radiation. These are the methods that thermal energy uses to travel from warmer places to cooler places.

Conduction

Heat transfer through direct contact

Convection

Example: Warm air rising in a room

Radiation

Heat transfer through electromagnetic waves
Example: Sunlight warming your skin

Each type of heat transfer plays important roles in our world. Conduction helps cook food on a stove, convection creates ocean currents and weather patterns, and radiation brings us warmth from the sun. These three methods work together to distribute heat throughout our planet!

Conservation of Energy

The law of conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed - it can only change forms or be transferred. This is one of the most important rules in science! The total amount of energy in a closed system always remains constant.

Think about a roller coaster: At the top of the hill, it has maximum potential energy. As it goes down, potential energy transforms into kinetic energy. At the bottom, it has maximum kinetic energy. The total energy remains the same throughout the ride!

Energy transformation is when energy changes from one form to another. This happens constantly all around us! Here are some common examples:
