About this worksheet

Your students used at least five machines before breakfast today — and probably never noticed! This one-page simple machines worksheet turns everyday household moments into a science observation hunt that makes the six simple machines feel real, relevant, and memorable.

Students read a short, friendly introduction, then work through:  familiar moments — climbing the stairs, slicing an apple, twisting a jar lid, turning a doorknob, popping a bottle cap, raising the blinds, rolling a pizza cutter, and propping a door open. Using the word bank, they name the simple machine hiding in each one: lever, wedge, inclined plane, screw, wheel and axle, and pulley. Repeated machines are deliberate — recognizing the same machine in two different objects is where the real learning happens.

What's included:

  • One-page, no-prep worksheet with word bank
  • Complete answer key
  • Printable pdf activity and interactive

Perfect as a unit opener for forces and engineering design, a sub-day activity, homework, or early-finisher work. Supports NGSS MS-ETS1-2 and MS-PS2-2 (supporting). Simple to hand out, easy to grade, and guaranteed to have students spotting machines everywhere they look!
