Biomes of the World

Biomes of the World helps your upper-elementary students map Earth’s major biomes and discover how climate shapes where plants and animals live. Students find, color, and label six biomes on a world map, then reason about why each one is home to different living things.

In Step 1, a Color Key introduces the six biomes—tropical rainforest, desert, grassland, temperate forest, taiga, and tundra—with a quick climate clue and a color for each. Students color the six numbered regions on the map and write each biome’s name. In Step 2, they use what they learned to finish sentences (the hottest and rainiest biome, the coldest and treeless one, where a camel or a zebra lives) and explain in their own words why biomes have different plants and animals.

This no-prep printable connects weather and climate with life science. It supports NGSS 3-ESS2-2 (climates of different regions) and NGSS 3-LS4-3 (organisms surviving in their habitats)—great for an ecosystems unit, a science center, or a geography lesson.
