About this worksheet

Read the Clues, Predict Float or Sink: Inferences

Four illustrated clue cards, four quick decisions - and no math. An apple bobs at the top of the water. A steel bolt drops to the bottom. An egg that sank in plain water floats once you stir in salt. A huge, heavy log floats while a tiny pebble sinks. For each card, students circle what they can figure out, then underline the words that tipped them off. It is pure relative-density reasoning, exactly what TEKS 6.6D assesses.

What's Included

  • 1 student page: 4 illustrated inference cards with three answer choices each
  • 1 teacher key page with the answer and the exact clue words for every card, plus a short note on the underlining task
  • Letter-size PDF, no prep

How It Helps You Teach

  • Builds the core rule - floats if less dense than the fluid, sinks if more dense - through pictures students can reason from
  • The salt-water egg card teaches "relative to the fluid" (the water changed, not the egg); the log-and-pebble card breaks the "heavy things sink" myth
  • Qualitative on purpose - the calculations live in the Reading in Science; this sheet is about thinking
