About this worksheet
Fractions of a set worksheet that moves the whole from a single shape to a group of objects. Across three student pages, learners name the fraction of balloons or marbles that are colored, color objects to match a story, and finally circle a set into equal groups to find a fraction of a number.
What's inside (3 student pages, 6 numbered problems)
- Page 1 – Read the set: 6 balloons with 4 red, 8 marbles with 5 blue. Students write the fraction colored and not colored in fraction boxes.
- Page 2 – Color to match: 4 cupcakes and 6 apples. Students color the number named in the story, then write both fractions. A hint reminds them to count the plain ones too.
- Page 3 – Equal groups: 8 cookies circled into 4 groups and 6 stars into 3 groups. Students find 1/4 and 2/4 of 8, then 1/3 and 2/3 of 6.
Standards: CCSS 3.NF.A.1, with the whole defined as a group of objects. Page 3 previews the fraction-of-a-number thinking students will formalize in Grade 4.
Why teachers love it: Numbered problem boxes, everyday objects students can color, and a read → color → group arc that builds from naming to reasoning. Every fraction is paired with its complement so students see the two parts make the whole set. Print-and-go.
