About this worksheet
Help your fourth graders meet the leaders who speak for them in Florida's state government! In this one-page worksheet, students read a short passage about representative government, sort four state leaders by who votes for them, then decide if four sentences are true or false.
The passage explains that Florida has a representative government, which means voters elect people to make decisions for them. All Florida voters elect the governor, who leads the state for four years, and the attorney general, the state's top lawyer. Students learn that Florida is split into areas called districts, and that voters in each district elect a state senator and a state representative to speak for them in the Legislature in Tallahassee. The passage also shows how citizens can share ideas with these leaders: by writing a letter, sending an email, making a phone call, or visiting a leader's office. Students find out they can look up their own senator and representative on the Florida Legislature's website. A Key Words note explains elect, represent, and district. In the sorting activity, students place each leader under All Florida voters or Voters in one district. The sheet is written to Florida benchmark SS.4.CG.2.3.
