About this worksheet

Solid Ice and Liquid Water: Grade 2 Science Worksheet

Is it ice or water? A short box with a water drop and an ice cube teaches the two forms: liquid water flows, and solid ice keeps its shape and is found in cold places. Students then look at a picture map with snowy mountain tops, a river, a lake, and the ocean.

Key Science Vocabulary

  • liquid: water that can flow
  • solid: water that is hard and keeps its shape
  • ice: solid, frozen water
  • snow: frozen water that falls from the sky and covers cold mountain tops

What Students Do

  • Read a picture box about liquid water and solid ice
  • Part A: find four numbers on the map and circle liquid or solid (the first one is done)
  • Part B: two circle questions: where the ice is on the map and which water can flow
  • Visual answer key with the answers on the map

Standards

NGSS 2-ESS2-3: Obtain information to identify where water is found on Earth and that it can be solid or liquid.

Where It Fits in Grades K to 5

This sheet follows Where Is Water Found? and connects to the grade 2 study of solids and liquids. Later grades explain melting and freezing and the water cycle.

Teaching Tip

Hold up an ice cube and a cup of water. Ask, “Which one keeps its shape? Which one flows?” Then let students find the ice on the map. Takes 5 to 10 minutes and prints best in color.
