About this worksheet

Where Is Water Found?: Grade 2 Science Worksheet

Where can we find water? Second graders look at a bright picture map with mountains, trees, a big ocean, a river, a lake, and a pond. A short box tells what each word means. Then students write the name of each kind of water in its box on the map.

Key Science Vocabulary

  • ocean: very big, salty water
  • river: water that flows across the land
  • lake: water with land all around it
  • pond: a small, shallow lake where plants grow

What Students Do

  • Read four short word meanings
  • Part A: write ocean, river, lake, or pond in the label boxes on the map, using a word bank (ocean is done)
  • Part B: two circle questions about which water flows and which is biggest
  • Visual answer key with the names on the map

Standards

NGSS 2-ESS2-3: Obtain information to identify where water is found on Earth and that it can be solid or liquid.

Where It Fits in Grades K to 5

Grade 2 names the kinds of water on Earth and reads simple maps of land and water. The next sheet in this set shows that water can be solid or liquid. In grade 5, students learn how much of Earth’s water is salty and how much is fresh.

Teaching Tip

Ask students to trace the river with a finger from the mountains to the ocean. Then ask, “Which water has land all around it?” Takes 5 to 10 minutes and prints best in color.
