Journey of a Sea Turtle

Sea turtles are some of the most amazing travelers in the ocean. Their life cycle is like a marathon that covers thousands of miles and can last for decades!

The journey begins when a mother sea turtle crawls onto a sandy beach at night. She digs a hole and lays 80 to 120 eggs before covering them with sand to keep them safe. This is called nesting.

After about 60 days, tiny hatchlings break out of their eggs. At night, they dig up together and race toward the ocean, trying to avoid predators like crabs, birds, and raccoons. Only about 1 in 1,000 hatchlings will survive to become an adult!

Next are the 'lost years.' Young turtles float in ocean currents, hiding in seaweed and slowly growing. As they become juveniles, they move to coastal waters and eat jellyfish, seaweed, and crabs.

It takes 15 to 50 years for a sea turtle to become a fully grown adult. When ready to breed, adults travel thousands of miles to return to the same beach where they were born. Scientists believe they use Earth's magnetic field, their sense of smell, and maybe even star patterns as a natural GPS to find their way home. This long trip is called migration.

Sea turtles face many dangers. Predators eat eggs and babies. Plastic pollution is a big threat because turtles can mistake plastic bags for food like jellyfish. Fishing nets can trap them, and light pollution from cities can confuse hatchlings, making them go the wrong way.

People are working to protect sea turtles. There are protected nesting beaches, turtle-safe fishing gear, and 'lights-out' programs during nesting season. There are seven kinds of sea turtles: green, loggerhead, leatherback, hawksbill, Kemp's ridley, olive ridley, and flatback.

Interesting Fact: Some sea turtles travel over 10,000 miles in one migration—one of the longest journeys in the animal kingdom!
