What are Chromosomes?

Chromosomes are thread-like structures inside every cell that carry your genetic information - the instructions that make you who you are! Think of them as your body's instruction manuals.

Here's what you should know about chromosomes:

• They're made of DNA tightly coiled around proteins
• Humans have 46 chromosomes in most cells (23 pairs)
• You inherit half from your mother and half from your father
• Chromosomes determine traits like eye color, height, and more
• They're only visible when cells are dividing

Chromosome Structure

Structure of a chromosome

Chromosomes have a special structure that helps them store and protect your genetic information:

1

Chromatids

Two identical arms that form the chromosome

2

Centromere

The "waist" that holds chromatids together

3

Telomeres

Protective caps at the ends of chromosomes

4

DNA

The genetic material wrapped around proteins

Chromosomes look different at different times:

• During cell division, they become compact and visible
• Between divisions, they uncoil into chromatin (like thread)
• This coiling and uncoiling helps protect DNA and control gene activity

Types and Functions of Chromosomes

Autosomes and sex chromosomes

Humans have two main types of chromosomes:

Autosomes

22 pairs that determine most body characteristics

Sex Chromosomes

1 pair (X and Y) that determine biological sex

Chromosomes have important functions:

Store genetic information: They hold DNA that contains your genes
Ensure accurate cell division: Help cells divide properly
Protect DNA: The coiled structure shields DNA from damage
Regulate gene activity: Control which genes are turned on or off
Enable inheritance: Pass traits from parents to children
