What is Rate of Change?

Plants growing is an example of rate of change

Rate of change is a math idea that tells us how much something changes over time. It answers questions like:

"How fast is this plant growing?"
"How quickly is this car moving?"
"How much water is filling this pool each minute?"

Think of rate of change as a way to measure how things grow, shrink, or move over time. It helps us understand how one thing changes when another thing changes.

For example, if you grow 5 centimeters taller each year, your growth rate is 5 cm per year. That's a rate of change!

How to Calculate Rate of Change

Calculating rate of change is like solving a simple puzzle. Here's the formula:

Rate of Change Formula

Rate = (Change in Y) ÷ (Change in X)

Y is what's changing (like height or distance), X is time or another measurement

Let's practice with an example:

Example: A sunflower grew from 50 cm to 80 cm in 10 days. What's its growth rate?
Step 1: Find the change in height → 80 cm - 50 cm = 30 cm
Step 2: Find the time passed → 10 days
Step 3: Calculate the rate → 30 cm ÷ 10 days = 3 cm per day

So the sunflower grows 3 centimeters each day!

Real-World Examples

Rate of change is all around us!
Rate of change is all around us!

Speed

If a car travels 120 miles in 2 hours, its speed is 120 ÷ 2 = 60 miles per hour.

Temperature

If temperature rises from 70°F to 85°F in 3 hours, the rate is (85-70)÷3 = 5°F per hour.

Baking

If a cake rises 3 inches in 30 minutes, its rising rate is 3÷30 = 0.1 inches per minute.

Saving Money

If you save $15 each week, your saving rate is $15 per week.

Rate of change helps us understand many everyday situations. Here's how you can find rates:

1. Identify what is changing (like distance, height, or money)
2. Measure how much it changes
3. Measure how much time passes
4. Divide the change by the time

Practice Quiz

Test your understanding with these questions. Choose the best answer for each one.

1. A puppy grew from 20 cm to 35 cm tall in 5 weeks. What's its growth rate?
2. A car travels 180 miles in 3 hours. What's its speed?
3. Which of these is NOT a rate of change?
4. Water in a pool rises from 2 feet to 5 feet in 6 hours. What's the rate?
5. If you save $5 each week, how much will you save in 8 weeks?
