Climate Data Detectives

Climate Data Detectives turns your third graders into weather investigators! Students graph real-style temperature and rainfall data for three mystery places, then use their finished bar graphs to crack the case and identify each region's climate.

In Step 1, students read a data table and color two scaled bar graphs—one for temperature and one for rainfall. In Step 2, they use those graphs to answer detective questions (Which place is hottest? Which gets the most rain?) and match each place to a climate using a word bank: desert, rainforest, or polar. A “Detective's Conclusion” prompt then asks students to describe one climate in their own words using the data.

This standards-packed printable hits NGSS 3-ESS2-1 and 3-ESS2-2 (representing weather data and comparing the climates of different regions) while also building scaled bar graph skills from CCSS Math 3.MD.B.3—a perfect science-and-math crossover.
