Constitutional Principles

Teach your third graders the big ideas behind our government! In this one-page worksheet, students read a short passage about constitutional principles, match four principles to their meanings, then decide which principle is shown in two short scenarios.

The passage explains four key principles in kid-friendly words. Popular sovereignty means the government's power comes from the people. The rule of law means everyone must follow the laws, even leaders. Separation of powers means the government's power is split into three branches. Checks and balances means each branch can stop the others from using too much power, like when the President says no to a law or the courts decide a law goes against the Constitution. The matching activity builds the vocabulary, and the scenarios, like a mayor getting a speeding ticket, help students see the principles in action. The diagram shows the three branches checking each other. Everything students need to answer is right on the page, so it works well for independent practice.
