Guess the State: The Midwest Region (Part 1)

Turn your Midwest region lesson into a fun state guessing game! In this one-page worksheet, third graders read short "I am..." riddles, find each mystery state on a real map, circle its name, and write it on the line. This is Part 1 of 3, and the three parts together cover all 12 states in the Midwest region.

The riddles in Part 1 are for North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas. Each riddle gives three short clues. Most clues use the map and directions, like "Canada is to my north" or "Oklahoma is to my south", so students practice reading a map with cardinal directions. The last clue is a fun fact, like Mount Rushmore or sunflower fields, that helps the state stick in their memory. Students choose from three state names, and the wrong choices are real neighbors, so they have to check the map.
