Guess the State: The Southwest Region

Turn your Southwest region lesson into a fun state guessing game! In this one-page worksheet, third graders read short "I am..." riddles, find each mystery state on a real map, circle its name, and write it on the line. It covers all four states in the Southwest region on one sheet.

The riddles are for Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma. Each riddle gives three short clues. Most clues use the map and directions, like "California is to my west" or "Kansas is to my north," so students practice reading a map with cardinal directions. The last clue is a fun fact, like the Grand Canyon or the Gulf of Mexico, that helps the state stick in their memory. Students choose from three state names, and the wrong choices are real neighbors, so they have to check the map.
