About this worksheet

Polygons. This interactive and printable worksheet is designed to help students understand and identify polygons. The first page introduces the concept of polygons as closed shapes with straight lines and challenges students to distinguish between polygons and non-polygons. Students are presented with a variety of shapes and are instructed to mark those that do not meet the criteria for polygons with a large red X. This exercise helps reinforce the definition of polygons and encourages critical thinking as students analyze each shape's characteristics.

The second page of the worksheet takes the learning experience a step further by allowing students to apply their understanding of polygons through creative drawing. Empty boxes are provided for students to draw their own polygons, giving them the opportunity to demonstrate their grasp of the concept and explore different polygon shapes. This hands-on activity not only reinforces their understanding but also encourages creativity and spatial awareness. By combining identification and creation tasks, this worksheet offers a comprehensive approach to learning about polygons, catering to different learning styles and helping students develop a strong foundation in geometric concepts.

What will your child learn through this worksheet?

  • Understanding the definition and characteristics of polygons
  • Identifying polygons among various shapes
  • Distinguishing between polygons and non-polygons
  • Creating their own polygon shapes

Learning Outcomes

Cognitive

  • Correctly identify at least 90% of the polygons and non-polygons in the given set of shapes
  • Define a polygon using its key characteristics (closed shape with straight lines) with 100% accuracy

Psychomotor

  • Draw at least three different types of polygons with clear, straight lines and closed shapes
  • Accurately place red X marks over non-polygon shapes, demonstrating fine motor control

Affective

  • Show increased confidence in identifying and discussing geometric shapes
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm for creating their own polygon shapes

Interpersonal/Social

  • Engage in constructive discussions with peers about the properties of polygons
  • Share and explain their drawn polygons to classmates, practicing clear communication of geometric concepts

Curriculum

Common Core standards covered

3.G.A.1

Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.
