The Constitution

Help your third graders learn about the plan behind their government! In this one-page worksheet, students read a short passage about the United States Constitution, fill in four blanks with a word bank, then number four events in order to show how the Constitution was written.

The passage explains that the Constitution is the written plan for the government. It tells how the country's first plan was too weak, how leaders met in Philadelphia in 1787 with George Washington leading the meeting, and how the states voted to approve the new plan. Students learn that the Constitution begins with the words "We the People," which means the government's power comes from the people. They also meet the word amendment, a change to the Constitution. The sequencing activity builds a key reading skill: putting historical events in the order they happened. Everything students need to answer is right on the page, so it works well for independent practice.
