School Integration: Ruby Bridges and the Little Rock Nine — Reading Comprehension

In 1954, the Supreme Court decided that schools should not be segregated. This meant Black and white students could go to the same schools. Still, many schools did not change right away. Some people did not want students of different races to learn together.

In 1957, a group of nine brave Black students, called the Little Rock Nine, tried to attend Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. Angry crowds and even state soldiers tried to stop them. Three years later, in 1960, a six-year-old girl named Ruby Bridges became the first Black student to attend William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans, Louisiana. Federal marshals walked with her to keep her safe. Every day, Ruby faced angry crowds who shouted at her. But she kept going to school. Her teacher, Mrs. Henry, was proud of Ruby's determination and courage.

Because of Ruby Bridges and the Little Rock Nine, more children could go to school together. Their bravery helped change unfair rules. This made schools more equal for everyone. Today, students of all races can learn together because of their actions.
