About This Reader
Starfish, or sea stars, are fascinating marine predators with unique feeding habits that play a crucial role in ocean ecosystems. These echinoderms have a diverse diet that varies among species, but many are known for their fondness of mollusks like clams and oysters. Starfish employ an extraordinary feeding method: they use their strong arms to pry open bivalve shells and then evert their stomachs, extending them out of their bodies and into the shell to digest their prey externally. Some starfish species are opportunistic feeders, consuming small fish, sea urchins, and even other starfish. Others filter feed on plankton and detritus in the water column. By consuming a variety of marine organisms, including carrion, starfish help maintain the balance and cleanliness of their habitats, showcasing their importance in marine food webs and ecosystem health.
