What is a Half?

A half is one of two equal parts of a whole

A half is one of two equal parts that make up a whole. When we divide something into two equal parts, each part is called a half.

We write a half as the fraction ½. The number 1 on top (numerator) tells us we have one part, and the number 2 on the bottom (denominator) tells us the whole is divided into two equal parts.

Halves are all around us! When you share a sandwich equally with a friend, each of you gets a half. When an apple is cut right down the middle, you get two halves.

How to Find a Half

Step-by-step guide showing how to divide shapes into two equal parts
Dividing different shapes into two equal halves

Finding half of something means dividing it into two equal parts. Here's how you can find halves:

1. For objects: Measure or visualize dividing the object into two equal parts. Each part is a half.

2. For numbers: To find half of a number, divide it by 2. For example, half of 10 is 5 because 10 ÷ 2 = 5.

3. For shapes: Draw a line through the center that divides the shape into two identical parts. If the parts are exactly the same, you've found halves!

Finding Half of a Number

Half = Number ÷ 2

To find half of any number, divide it by 2.
