What is Vertical Addition?

Illustration showing two addition problems
Horizontal vs. vertical addition methods

Vertical addition is a method of adding numbers by writing them one under the other, aligning the same place values (units, tens, hundreds, etc.). This makes it easier to add, especially for larger numbers.

Why do we use vertical addition? When numbers get bigger, adding them horizontally can become confusing. Writing them vertically helps us:

  • Align numbers by place value
  • Carry over numbers more easily
  • See each step clearly
  • Reduce mistakes in calculation

Vertical addition is especially helpful for adding 2-digit, 3-digit, and larger numbers. It's a foundational skill you'll use throughout your math journey!

How to Add Vertically

Step-by-step vertical addition with carrying

Let's learn how to add numbers vertically step by step:

Step 1: Align the numbers
Write the numbers one under the other, making sure the digits are aligned by place value (units under units, tens under tens, etc.).

Step 2: Add the units column
Start from the rightmost column (units). Add the digits together. If the sum is 10 or more, write the units digit and carry the tens digit to the next column.

Step 3: Add the tens column
Move to the next column (tens). Add all the digits in this column plus any carried number from the previous column.

Step 4: Continue with higher place values
Repeat the process for each column, moving from right to left.

Example: Add 47 + 25

47
+ 25
72
  1. Add units: 7 + 5 = 12 (write 2, carry 1)
  2. Add tens: 4 + 2 + 1 (carry) = 7
  3. Final answer: 72
