About this worksheet
Introduce Earth's four spheres with this one-page reading and sorting worksheet! Students read a short passage about the biosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and geosphere, then sort real examples into the right sphere.
The passage explains that scientists study Earth as four big systems called spheres. The geosphere is the solid part of Earth, including rocks, soil, sand, mountains, and the hot layers deep inside the planet. The hydrosphere is all of Earth's water, from oceans, rivers, and lakes to water under the ground and frozen water in glaciers and ice caps. The atmosphere is the layer of gases around Earth, such as nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide, that gives us air and weather. The biosphere is every living thing, from tiny bacteria to giant whales. A simple doodle of Earth with a cloud, a tree, and ocean waves sits beside the passage. In the first activity, students read eight short examples, such as a glacier sliding down a mountain or wind blowing across a field, and write each letter under the right sphere in a four-column table. In the second activity, students decide if four sentences are true or false, including whether the spheres affect each other. The sheet is written to Texas TEKS 6.10A and also fits NGSS MS-ESS2-1.
What's inside:
- A short passage on the four spheres with a simple doodle
- An 8-item sort into biosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and geosphere
- 4 true or false sentences
- A visual answer key
How teachers use it:
- As an introduction to a unit on Earth's systems
