Organism, Population, and Community

Give your sixth graders a clear way to tell organisms, populations, and communities apart! In this one-page worksheet, students read three short topic cards, sort six examples into a table, and then decide if four sentences are true or false.

Each card covers one level with its own picture and heading. A question at the top gives a quick test for each level. The organism card explains that one oak tree, one squirrel, and one mushroom are each an organism. The population card explains that all the organisms of the same kind in one area, like all the gray squirrels in a park, make one population. The community card explains that all the different populations living together, like the squirrels, oak trees, robins, and mushrooms, form a community. A closing line connects the levels to the whole ecosystem: add the nonliving parts, like soil and water, and the community becomes an ecosystem. In the sorting activity, students place six new examples, such as one monarch butterfly, all the honeybees in one hive, and the fish, coral, and sea turtles on a reef, into the Organism, Population, or Community column. The true or false items target common mix-ups, like thinking one robin is a population. The sheet is written to Texas TEKS 6.12C.
