Multi-Step Fraction Word Problems

Multi-step fraction word problems that teach students how to break a problem into steps before they compute. Each problem comes with a Show your work box and a labeled answer box with the denominator already filled in, so students focus on the reasoning rather than the format.

What's inside (3 student pages, 6 problems)

• Pages 1–2 – Steps given: Four problems with Step 1 and Step 2 printed. Students subtract mixed numbers from whole amounts (3 cups of flour, 5 feet of ribbon), add tenths and hundredths (3/10 + 45/100 liter), and multiply a unit fraction by a whole number (5 pancakes at 1/3 cup each).
• Page 3 – Plan your own steps: Two problems with blank step lines. Students write their own plan, compute (4 × 2/5 mile; 8/8 − 3/8 − 2/8 pizza), and circle whether the result is more or less than a benchmark.

Standards: CCSS 4.NF.B.3.D (add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with like denominators in word problems), CCSS 4.NF.B.4.C (multiply a fraction by a whole number in word problems), and CCSS 4.NF.C.5 (add tenths and hundredths).
