What is a Dependent Variable in Math?

Illustration showing input-output machine with x (independent) going in and y (dependent) coming out
Input (independent) vs Output (dependent) in math

In math, a dependent variable is the output value that depends on the input value (called the independent variable). It's usually represented by the letter y in equations.

Think of it like a machine:

  • You put in a number (independent variable x)
  • The machine follows a rule (the equation)
  • Out comes the result (dependent variable y)

Math Relationship

y = f(x)

This means "y is a function of x" - y depends on what x is

Dependent Variables in Functions

Three example equations showing how y changes when x changes: y=2x, y=x+5, y=x²
Dependent variables in different equations

Let's see how dependent variables work in different math functions:

Example 1: Linear Function
Equation: y = 2x + 3
Here, y depends on x. If x=1, then y=5. If x=2, y=7.

Example 2: Quadratic Function
Equation: y = x²
When x changes, y changes by being squared. x=3 → y=9, x=4 → y=16.

Equation Independent (x) Dependent (y)
y = x + 235
y = 3x412
y = x² - 1524

Graphing Dependent Variables

Coordinate grid showing x-axis (independent) and y-axis (dependent) with plotted points for y=2x
Graphing independent vs dependent variables

When we graph math functions:

  • The independent variable (x) goes on the horizontal axis (left-right)
  • The dependent variable (y) goes on the vertical axis (up-down)

This helps us visualize how y changes when x changes. The steeper the line or curve, the more y changes for each change in x.
