About This Reader

Ocean acidification occurs when carbon dioxide dissolves in seawater, forming carbonic acid and lowering the ocean's pH. This harms marine life, especially shellfish and coral reefs, which rely on calcium carbonate to build their shells and skeletons. The primary cause is the burning of fossil fuels, which releases excess CO₂. Solutions include reducing emissions, protecting coastal ecosystems, and adopting renewable energy. Understanding ocean acidification is key to preserving marine biodiversity and ensuring healthy oceans for future generations.
