Thomas Jefferson was the third president of the United States. He helped shape the young nation. Born in Virginia in 1743, Jefferson was curious and loved to learn. He studied science, music, and many languages.

Jefferson believed all people should have rights and freedom. He helped write the Declaration of Independence. In it, he wrote, "All men are created equal." This idea became very important to Americans.

As president, Jefferson wanted the country to grow. In 1803, he made a big decision. He bought a huge piece of land from France. This land was called the Louisiana Purchase. The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the United States. It stretched from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains.

Jefferson sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the new land. Their journey was called the Lewis and Clark Expedition. They traveled by boat and on foot. They made maps, met Native American tribes, and wrote about new plants and animals.

The Louisiana Purchase was important for many reasons. The United States now had more land for people to live and farm. The country could trade using the Mississippi River. It also showed other countries that America was strong and growing.

Jefferson had to make hard choices. Some people thought the purchase was not legal. Others worried about meeting new groups of people in the west. Jefferson listened to many ideas. He wanted what was best for the country.

Jefferson’s actions helped the United States become a larger and stronger nation. He showed bravery and wisdom. His ideas about freedom and growth still shape America today.
