Battles in the South: Reading Passages & Comprehension (Grade 5)

Follow the American Revolution into its final theater with this set of 10 short reading passages on the southern campaign. Told in order, each passage covers one key battle or leader and is written at a grade 5 reading level with an illustration that helps students picture the action. From crushing defeats to the final surrender at Yorktown, students see how the tide slowly turned toward American independence.

Battles and leaders students will explore: the war moving south, the Fall of Charleston, the Battle of Camden, Nathanael Greene, the Swamp Fox (Francis Marion), Kings Mountain, Cowpens, Guilford Courthouse, the Siege of Yorktown, and the British surrender.
