A BMI calculator uses a simple mathematical formula to calculate a number. The formula is:
$B M I = \frac{w e i g h t (k g)}{h e i g h t (m)^{2}}$ or $B M I = \frac{w e i g h t (l b s)}{h e i g h t (i n)^{2}} \times 703$

Example 2 (Imperial): A student weighs 75 lbs and is 4 feet 5 inches (53 inches) tall. The BMI would be $(75 / (53^{2})) * 703 = 18.7$ . This also falls into the healthy weight range.
