What is a Bronchus?

The bronchus (plural: bronchi) is a major air passage in your respiratory system that connects your windpipe (trachea) to your lungs. When you breathe in, air travels down your trachea, which then splits into two main bronchi - one for each lung.

Think of your respiratory system as an upside-down tree! The trachea is the trunk, the bronchi are the main branches, and the smaller bronchioles are the twigs. This branching system helps deliver oxygen to all parts of your lungs.

How Bronchi Work

Bronchi have special features that help them do their job:

1

Cartilage Rings

C-shaped rings of cartilage keep the bronchi open for air passage

2

Smooth Muscle

Muscle tissue allows bronchi to constrict or expand

3

Mucous Membrane

Special lining traps dust and germs

4

Cilia

Tiny hair-like structures sweep mucus upward

When you breathe in, the bronchi widen to allow more air into your lungs. When you breathe out, they narrow slightly. This amazing system ensures that air reaches the tiny air sacs (alveoli) where oxygen enters your bloodstream.

Keeping your bronchi healthy is essential for good breathing. Some common conditions that affect the bronchi include:

Bronchitis

Inflammation of the bronchial tubes often caused by infection

Asthma

Chronic condition where bronchi constrict making breathing difficult

Bronchiectasis

Permanent widening of the bronchi due to damage

You can keep your bronchi healthy by:
• Avoiding smoking and secondhand smoke
• Washing hands to prevent infections
• Getting recommended vaccinations
• Exercising regularly to strengthen lungs
• Avoiding pollution when possible
