What is Gravitational Energy?

Gravitational energy is the energy stored in an object when it is lifted above the ground. The higher an object is lifted, the more gravitational energy it has. This energy comes from Earth's gravity pulling the object downward.

Think of a roller coaster at the top of a hill - it has lots of stored gravitational energy! When released, this energy transforms into motion energy as the coaster speeds down the track.

Gravitational energy depends on three main factors:

When an object falls, its gravitational energy transforms into kinetic energy (energy of motion). This is why objects speed up as they fall - their stored energy is becoming motion energy!
