What was the American Revolutionary War?

The American Revolutionary War, also known as the American War of Independence, was a big fight between Great Britain and its 13 colonies in North America. It lasted from 1775 to 1783. The colonists were unhappy with Great Britain's laws and taxes, especially because they had no say in the government. The war was their way of fighting for freedom and creating their own country.

The war had many important battles. Here are two of the most famous:

Battle of Saratoga

This battle happened in 1777. The American victory here was a huge turning point. It convinced France to join the war and help the Americans with soldiers and supplies. This was a very important help!

Battle of Yorktown

This was the final big battle of the war in 1781. The Continental Army, with help from the French, surrounded the British army at Yorktown, Virginia. The British were forced to surrender. This victory basically ended the fighting.

Important Leaders of the War

Many brave people led the fight for independence. One of the most important was George Washington. He was the Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army. It was his leadership that kept the army together through tough times and led them to victory.

The Treaty of Paris

The war officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783. This important document was signed by representatives from both Great Britain and the United States. It recognized the United States as a new, free country. This treaty was the official end of the American Revolutionary War and the birth of the United States of America.
