About This Reader
The inner planets of the solar system—Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars—are known for their solid, rocky surfaces. Mercury, the smallest, experiences extreme temperature swings. Venus, shrouded in thick clouds, is the hottest planet, with mountains and volcanoes. Earth is the only planet with life, offering water, air, and diverse climates. Mars, the Red Planet, has iron-rich soil, the solar system's tallest volcano, and a massive canyon. These terrestrial planets differ from the gas giants and offer clues about planetary formation and the conditions necessary for life. Understanding these planets helps us uncover the solar system's past and potential for future exploration.
