Temperate Climate Zones
The temperate climate zone is a region of the Earth found between the tropics and the polar regions. Countries like the United States, much of Europe, and parts of Asia are in this zone. The temperate climate zone is known for having four distinct seasons: spring, summer, autumn (or fall), and winter.
Seasons change because of the way the Earth moves. The Earth travels around the Sun in an orbit that takes about 365 days. While it orbits the Sun, the Earth is tilted at an angle of about 23.5 degrees. This tilt is called the axial tilt. Because of this tilt, different parts of the Earth receive different amounts of sunlight during the year.
When the Northern hemisphere is tilted toward the Sun, it gets more direct sunlight, and days are longer. This is summer in places like the United States and Europe. At the same time, the Southern Hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun, getting less sunlight and shorter days, which means it is winter there. Six months later, the situation is reversed.
Spring and autumn are transition seasons. During these times, neither hemisphere is tilted strongly toward or away from the Sun. This causes the length of days and nights to be about equal. These points are called equinoxes.
The change in seasons affects everything from weather to animal behavior. In spring, many plants begin to grow and animals come out of hibernation. In summer, temperatures are warmest, and many fruits and vegetables ripen. Autumn is a time when leaves change color and fall from trees. In winter, many plants stop growing, and some animals hibernate or migrate to warmer places.
People also adjust their activities based on the season. For example, in summer, people might go swimming or have picnics because it is warm and sunny. In winter, they might wear heavy coats and play in the snow.
Interesting Fact:
Interesting Fact: In some temperate regions, the difference between summer and winter temperatures can be more than 30 degrees Celsius (54 degrees Fahrenheit)!
